South Korea will focus on “superior” capabilities against North Korean threats
South Korea aims to raise defense spending by an annual average of 6.8 percent over the next five years. The main efforts will be focused on providing "superior" capabilities to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. The Ministry of Defense of the country reported this, Yonhap writes.
The plan for the 2023-2027 time frame features various defense reinforcement schemes, including securing more midsize submarines equipped with ballistic missiles, additional stealth fighters, and a plan to keep the number of active-duty personnel at the current 500,000.

It contains a number of blueprints designed to provide "overwhelming" capabilities. They include purchasing additional stealth jets to bolster "real-time" strike capabilities against moving targets and deploying tactical surface-to-surface missiles. Additional submarines equipped with ballistic missiles to enhance "surprise" strike capabilities are also included in the plan.

To create a multi-layered anti-missile defense system, the plan is to run ballistic missile early warning radars and radar systems on Aegis destroyers. During the specified period, it is planned to complete the deployment of Cheongung-II medium-range surface-to-air missiles and to deploy advanced long-range surface-to-air missile (L-SAM) interceptors.

To strengthen the combating drone capabilities, it is planned to implement four projects with a total cost of £440 million, which would include the deployment of laser weapons. Additionally, several reconnaissance satellites are planned to be deployed to monitor key military targets. The South Korean military also plans to develop artificial intelligence-based combat systems employing both manned and unmanned defense platforms.
As previously reported, the Republic of Korea ordered the first batch of national compact Light Armed Helicopter (LAH) combat helicopters.
