British Prime Minister confirms transfer of Challenger 2 tanks

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed that his country will provide Ukraine with Challenger 2 tanks, during a telephone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Source: the Office of the British Prime Minister, as reported by European Pravda Quote: "The leaders reflected on the current state of Russia's war in Ukraine, with successive Ukrainian victories pushing Russian troops back and compounding their military and morale issues.

They agreed on the need to seize on this moment with an acceleration of global military and diplomatic support to Ukraine. The Prime Minister outlined the UK's ambition to intensify our support to Ukraine, including through the provision of Challenger 2 tanks and additional artillery systems," the statement said.

Sunak and Zelenskyy welcomed other international commitments in this regard, including Poland's proposal to provide Ukraine with a company of Leopard tanks. "The Prime Minister stressed that he and the whole UK Government would be working intensively with international partners to deliver rapidly the kind of support which will allow Ukraine to press their advantage, win this war and secure a lasting peace," the statement said.

President Zelensky did not mention the Challenger 2 tanks after the conversation, but noted that he thanks Sunak for the decisions that will strengthen the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the battlefield.

In his social media, the president noted that the always strong support from the UK has now become impenetrable and ready for challenges.  "In a conversation with the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, I thanked [him] for the decisions that will not only strengthen us on the battlefield, but also send the right signal for other partners," Zelenskyy added without further details.

According to the British tabloid The Sun, Sunak approved the plan to send 12 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, the first units of armoured vehicles must be transferred immediately. According to media reports, the British government will officially announce the decision to transfer Challenger 2 battle tanks to Ukraine on Monday. According to Bloomberg, the German federal government may announce a decision on the supply of western tanks to Ukraine next week.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, five countries are ready to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, but they are waiting for Germany's decision.
