Kuleba calls Hungary’s proposal to lift sanctions against 9 Putin’s associates unacceptable

Dmytro Kuleba, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, has criticised Hungary's proposal to exclude nine people from the sanctions list of the European Union, where they were initially put due to the full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine. Source: Kuleba on Twitter; European Pravda Quote: "Hungary's proposals to lift sanctions against nine Putin associates are unacceptable.

Instead, the 10th EU sanctions package should hit Russia and its war chest harder: severe sanctions on missile and drone industry, individuals, energy, banks, media and ICT, plus new sanctions on Iran." Radio Svoboda reports that Hungary is once again demanding to ease sanctions imposed by the EU during a couple of rounds over the Russian invasion of Ukraine and insisting on removing nine people from the sanctions list.

Among these people are Putin's associates and oligarchs Alisher Usmanov, Petr Aven and Victor Rashnikov. Hungary had tried to remove these three from sanctions back in September but backed down after political pressure.

Hungary also seeks to exclude Gulbakhor Ismailova, Usmanov's sister, Mikhail Fridman, Aven's business partner, Dmitriy Mazepin, a Belarusian-Russian oligarch, and Nikita Mazepin, his son, as well as Russian oligarchs Grigoriy Berezkin and Viacheslav Kantor. The media previously reported that Brussels has accelerated worke on the 10th sanctions package and hopes to approve it before the Ukraine-EU Summit in Kyiv.

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, stated that the primary focus of the 10th sanctions package would be closing loopholes and guaranteeing significant consequences for those who evade the EU sanctions.
