Russians lie about successes near Vuhledar and Orikhiv – British intelligence
Russian units have probably conducted local, probing attacks near Orikhiv and Vuhledar [the settlements that are closest to the "border" of Russian-occupied territories - ed.], but it is highly unlikely that Russia has actually achieved any substantive advances. Source: Latest UK Defence Intelligence update on the situation in Ukraine, as reported by European Pravda Details: UK Defence Intelligence noted that online commentators have claimed Russian forces have made significant advances, breaking through Ukrainian defences in two areas: in Zaporizhzhia Oblast near Orikhiv, and 100km to the east, in Donetsk Oblast, near Vuhledar.
Quote: "There is a realistic possibility that Russian military sources are deliberately spreading misinformation in an effort to imply that the Russian operation is sustaining momentum."
Background:
- UK Defence Intelligence reported that Russia has likely completed training of the 2nd Guards Motor Rifle Division (GMRD), which is an element of the 1st Guards Tank Army which suffered major losses in the opening phases of the full-scale war.
- According to the estimates made by the intelligence service, it is now primarily made up of mobilised personnel operating older equipment taken from storage.
- UK Defence Intelligence also reported that Russia's intentions to expand the army indicate that the Kremlin sees a period with possible risks of armed conflict ahead, but organising such an expansion of the army will not be easy.
