The total amount of the U.S. defense budget for next year could exceed £835 billion. It is believed that this would become one of the largest peacetime defense budgets. The current budget is £816 million.

U.S. President Joe Biden will present the plan on Thursday. Bloomberg reports this.

It is noted that of the total amount, £170 billion will be allocated to purchase weapons, and another 145 billion will be spent on research and development of new types of weapons. Both amounts are at an all-time high.

The media emphasizes that the weapons sent to Ukraine exhausted the Pentagon's reserves, but separate appropriations financed the costs of supporting Ukraine.

Next year's budget is shaping up in large part due to escalating tensions with China, which the U.S. sees as a major potential rival. It is emphasized that the Pentagon's request reflects a budget that is still focused primarily on weapons development for future wars and not on procurement for the war in the near future.

The major systems that are planned to be purchased from the proposed budget include, for example, the F-35 from Lockheed Martin. It is planned to allocate £13.5 billion to these platforms to extend development and modernization. The Pentagon will request 83 F-35s for the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps.

This would include the planned 48 aircraft for the Air Force and 35 for the Navy and Marine Corps.

In total, the £170 billion procurement bid exceeds what Congress has allocated for this fiscal year by 8 billion. The research and development request is about £5 billion higher than what Congress approved. One of the media's sources emphasized that the budget also suggests significant funding for long-range ammunition for the US and Navy aircraft, which could be used in a potential future conflict with China.

Previously, China announced a 7.2% increase in its defense budget for next year, which is slightly more than last year's 7.1%.
