Poland supports procurement of ammunition for Ukraine outside the EU

This is necessary to expedite their supply to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki made the comment in an interview with RMF FM. The politician emphasized that Ukraine needed artillery shells on the battlefield immediately.

According to him, if European manufacturers are currently unable to meet the demand for shells quickly, there are several other manufacturers in the world from which they could be purchased.

"There are several regions in the world, including South Korea and Israel, where there are many more such munitions. Therefore, I count on the fact that our joint discussions with the European Commission and several key countries, Germany and France, will lead to the rapid receipt of ammunition, because Ukraine needs them here and now," Morawiecki said.

It is noted that France is currently opposed to the purchase of ammunition outside the European Union and insists that the contracts be awarded to European companies. "I will convince them (EU countries - ed.), because ammunition is needed very quickly. Since we don't have such ammunition here in Europe in sufficient quantities, we have to buy them from outside," the Polish Prime Minister accentuated.

As previously reported, on March 20, the EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs agreed to supply Ukraine with 1 million 155 mm artillery ammunition during the year, however the process of agreeing details was still ongoing. Earlier, the EU member states agreed on a plan for the supply of ammunition to Ukraine, which also concerned the acceleration and expansion of the production of artillery shells at defense enterprises on the territory of the EU. This would enable replenishment of the arsenals of European countries and the necessary ammunition supply to Ukraine.

Information also appeared in the mass media that some EU countries wanted to buy ammunition for Ukraine outside the bloc, if the enterprises of EU member states were not able to produce them in such amounts and in a short period of time.

The EU has previously identified 15 enterprises in 11 countries that can produce 155mm artillery rounds, and five manufacturers of 152mm Soviet-type rounds.

Besides, work is underway to find new companies that are able to fulfill such an order.
