Ukrainian Air Force reveals NASAMS air defense system in first public release, highlights efficiency

The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine published a photo of the Ukrainian NASAMS air defense system and voiced its effectiveness for the first time. The Air Force Command's speaker, Yurii Ihnat, detailed how this anti-aircraft system works. "The advantage of these Western systems is the ability to work in a single information field, that is, to exchange information in real time.

If NASAMS did not get a target on this section, it will hit somewhere further on the Iris-T route, and if not, then Patriot," said Yurii Ihnat. He also assessed the effectiveness of complexes in the system for protecting Ukrainian airspace from Russian missile attacks. "At first, few missiles were shot down, because they did not acquire those capabilities.

There were 20-30% of missiles that were shot down. The indicators of shooting down targets began to grow rapidly when Western weapons came to us: such as NASAMS, Iris-T," the speaker summed up.

Ihnat stressed that although the effectiveness of the complexes is high, they cannot completely protect Ukrainian airspace: "Existing medium-range SAMs in Ukraine cannot physically cover the whole country, they cover important strategic directions, critical infrastructure facilities and are constantly moving.

Today, we have a wide range of various Soviet and foreign-made air defenses in the Armed Forces. But that's not enough. [Because] Our country is big, one of the largest in Europe." Currently, there are two NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems in service with the Ukrainian Air Force.

Six more complexes were ordered by the United States as part of military assistance for Ukraine, and one by Canada. Norway has also recently announced plans to transfer two firing platoons of this air defense system to Ukraine. The speaker also published the first photo of the anti-aircraft launcher.

It's painted in desert camouflage.

It is known that the anti-aircraft systems received by Ukraine were not withdrawn from the U.S. reserves, but taken directly from the manufacturer. It can be assumed that they were part of an order from one of the third countries. According to the CEO of Raytheon Technologies, Greg Hayes, the United States is cooperating with the Middle Eastern countries to receive their NASAMS in a short time.

Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that exactly one of these complexes is represented on the photo. According to Hayes, the point was to send a complex ordered by another country to Ukraine in a relatively short time: within three to six months. The U.S. will then still fulfill orders over the next 24 months.

Hayes noted that NASAMS takes two years to build because of the time it takes to procure electronic components and rocket engines. It is known that such an American-Norwegian complex is in service with Oman. Kuwait and Qatar have already placed orders and are awaiting NASAMS.
