Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina defeats top-ranked player and reaches Wimbledon semi-finals

For the second time in her career, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has reached the Wimbledon semifinals, this time after defeating the world's number one, Iga Swiatek.  Source: Suspilne Sport Details: Svitolina won in three sets: 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-2.

The key game in the first set was the game on Swiatek's serve, when the Pole was losing 5-6. Svitolina reached the set point after four points and clinched the decisive break.

Swiatek and Svitolina continued to battle it out throughout the second set. In the tiebreaker, Svitolina had a three-point advantage, but Swiatek ended up taking the second set.

Svitolina was leading in the third set from the start. After six games, she led 5-1, with two breaks to spare. Svitolina served at 5-2 and won three match points, defeating Swiatek on the second one and securing a place in the semi-finals of a major grass-court tournament.

Background: This was the second match between Svitolina and Swiatek, who has up until now won every match on the grass surface this season.

In May 2021, Swiatek defeated Svitolina in two sets at a tournament in Rome. Svitolina has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time; the first was during this year's French Open, when she lost and was eliminated. Before her match with Swiatek, Svitolina lost only two sets in four matches in this year's Wimbledon.
