First Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza invasion
Two Israeli soldiers were killed during combat operations in northern Gaza on Tuesday, the country's military said, as fighting in the Hamas-controlled enclave continued to intensify. They were the first confirmed fatalities among the Israel Defense Forces inside the Gaza Strip since the war with Hamas erupted. Staff Sgt.
Lavi Lipshitz, 20, from Modi'in and Staff Sgt. Roei Wolf, 20, from Ramat Gan, who both served in the Givati Infantry Brigade's reconnaissance unit, were killed in action, the IDF confirmed. The development came as the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said at least 50 Palestinians were killed by Israeli air strikes on the Jabalia refugee camp.
The strikes killed a senior Hamas commander and caused the collapse of Hamas' underground infrastructure, killing several other members of the terror group, an IDF spokesman said.

9:16PM[12]UN: Conflict emboldens 'repression' in Iran
The UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran said Tuesday that the Israel-Hamas war has emboldened "repression" inside the country, whose ruling clerics have championed the Palestinian militants.
Javaid Rehman, a human rights expert given a mandate from the Human Rights Council in Geneva, said that the Islamic republic was responding to a loss of credibility after mass protests set off by the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman detained by police for failing to obey the strict public dress code. "They were already planning further repression," Mr Rehman said at a Washington roundtable hosted by the National Union for Democracy in Iran, an advocacy group. "In terms of the current crisis, they feel even more emboldened because they believe that they have deflected internal criticism, and the internal repression, through becoming or claiming to become the cheerleaders... of the Palestinian movement," he said.
9:07PM[13]'Heightened' policing in New York amid Israel-Palestinian tensions
Police in New York City said on Tuesday they were on a "heightened" security footing as Halloween revelers took to the streets at a time of tension over the Israel-Palestinian conflict, but they added that no specific, credible threats had been made.
In other large US cities, where police departments have increased vigilance in recent weeks due to concern about terrorism or violent protests over the conflict in Gaza, officials reported few worries that Halloween would create additional threats. Police in Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago said they were taking no special Halloween-related precautions and that no specific threats had been received.

In an open letter entitled "2023 Ceasefire Ultimatum," Muslim leaders pledged to mobilize "Muslim, Arab, and allied voters" to "withhold endorsement, support, or votes for any candidate who endorses the Israeli offensive against the Palestinian people."
"Your administration's unconditional support, encompassing funding and armaments, has played a significant role in perpetuating the violence that is causing civilian casualties and has eroded trust in voters who previously put their faith in you," the council wrote.

It is not an "optional extra" for Israel to obey international law, Sir Keir Starmer has said. Asked if he thought Israel was acting within international law during the conflict in Gaza, the Labour leader said: "It has to act in accordance with international law, this is not an optional extra, a nice-to-have.
It has to be in accordance with international law. "That is a point that we have repeatedly pressed on Israel and other countries... it has to act in accordance with the law. "As to whether each and every act is in accordance with the law, well that will have to be adjudicated in due course.
"I think it is unwise for politicians to stand on stages like this or sit in television studios and pronounce day by day which acts may or may not be in accordance with international law."
11:45AM[69]Starmer says Israel-Gaza ceasefire would 'embolden' Hamas amid Labour revolt
Over in Westminster, Sir Keir Starmer is delivering a speech at Chatham House in central London on events in Israel and Gaza. The Labour leader said a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war would only "embolden" the terror group as he defended his position on the issue amid a Labour revolt. Sir Keir has called for "humanitarian pauses" in the fighting to allow more aid into Gaza and to allow people to flee but he is resisting calls from some Labour MPs and shadow ministers for a full ceasefire.
The Labour leader suggested calls for a full ceasefire are not "credible". He said: "While I understand calls for a ceasefire at this stage, I do not believe that it is the correct position now for two reasons. "One, because a ceasefire always freezes any conflict in the state where it currently lies.
And as we speak that would leave Hamas with the infrastructure and the capability to carry out the sort of attack we saw on October 7." He added: "Hamas would be emboldened and start preparing for future violence immediately. And it is this context which explains my second reason which is that our current calls for pauses in the fighting for clear and specific humanitarian purposes and which must start immediately is right in practice as well as principle.
"In fact it is at this moment the only credible approach that has any chance of achieving what we all want to see in Gaza, the urgent alleviation of Palestinian suffering, aid distributed quickly, space to get hostages out." 11:26AM[71]
Watch: Israeli envoy wears yellow star before UN Security Council
Israel's United Nations ambassador displayed a yellow star on his chest as he addressed the Security Council, pledging to wear the badge until members of the body condemn Hamas's "atrocities".

More than 420 children killed or injured in Gaza each day, says UNICEF
More than 420 children are being killed or injured in Gaza each day, the head of the UN children's agency has warned.
Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director, said the figure "should shake each of us to our core." According to figures from the Hamas-run health ministry, more than 8,300 people have been killed in Gaza - 66 per cent of them women and children. Ms Russell said the figure includes at least 3,400 children.
Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, said: "This surpasses the number of children killed annually across the world's conflict zones since 2019." He stressed that this cannot be "collateral damage."

The Israeli army demolished the West Bank home of exiled Hamas number two Saleh al-Aruri with explosives. The Israeli military said forces entered the village of Arura, near Ramallah, and shot at people who were "hurling" rocks towards them during the demolition.
Aruri is accused by Israel of masterminding numerous attacks. He was elected deputy to Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in 2017, before being officially named the group's number two.
An AFP journalist saw the ruins of the house in Arura, where Aruri's nephew said the move was meant to "intimidate" people. "And to distance people as much as possible from the resistance (to Israel), but these people are steadfast," said Qutaiba Khasib.
10:14AM[77]Doctors in Gaza face 'moral trauma' of who to save
Doctors in Gaza are facing a "moral trauma" of which patients to save as supplies run scarce, the head of a medical group has said. Dr Zaher Sahloul told the BBC World Service that his team are running out of anaesthesia, pain medication, blood products, antibiotics, gauze and many other items that are needed to stop the bleeding and treat patients in trauma.
"On top of that you have the bombing and limited, or shortage of, clean water, food, diesel and fuel," he said. He added: "So that means you have to make a decision as a doctor which patients you need to focus on, and maybe treat and save lives, and which patient you need to let go."

Half of the population of Gaza has been pushed towards the south in the past three weeks, the head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees has said. Philippe Lazzarini told a UN emergency meeting that one million people were pushed from the north of the Gaza Strip towards the south, adding that "significant numbers" had been killed.
"I have said many times, and I will say it again 'no place is safe in Gaza.'"
8:38AM[80]'Large exchanges' between Israel and Hamas, says IDF
There has been a "large amount of exchanges" between Israeli forces and Hamas in Gaza overnight, the Israel Defense Forces has claimed.

The American teenager Natalie Raanan, one of the first hostages released by Hamas last week, has safely returned home to Chicago. The Consul General of Israel to the Midwest Yinam Cohen said:
I am relieved that Natalie Raanan is back home in Chicago. Her family members have been anxiously waiting for her return, and today I am sharing their happiness.
While we're celebrating Natalie's return, we remember the 239 hostages, among them babies, children, women, and the...

An immediate humanitarian ceasefire has become "a matter of life and death for millions," the head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees has warned. Philippe Lazzarini told a UN emergency meeting that a further breakdown of civil order following the looting of the agency's warehouses by Palestinians searching for food and other aid "will make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the largest UN agency in Gaza to continue operating."
He added that "the handful of convoys" allowed into Gaza through the Rafah crossing from Egypt in recent days "is nothing compared to the needs of over two million people trapped in Gaza." "The system in place to allow aid into Gaza is geared to fail," he said, "unless there is political will to make the flow of supplies meaningful, matching the unprecedented humanitarian needs."

The silver estate car was heavily laden, its rear suspension visibly stressed as it moved up one of the two main roads running the length of Gaza. On a shabby A-road just south of Gaza City, the driver appears to see an Israeli tank hidden to his right before executing a hasty three-point turn to escape.
But it is too late. Before he can speed away, the car is hit broadsides by a tank shell at near point-blank range. The vehicle vanishes, together with its occupants and whatever it was carrying in a single terrifying blast.
Israel frees soldier kidnapped by Hamas in 'daring' Gaza raid
Israeli special forces have rescued a female soldier held hostage by Hamas during a raid in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Monday. The first successful rescue mission came as tanks surrounded and entered parts of Gaza City for the first time, cutting off a key escape route for civilians during the Israeli ground offensive. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, said his military had "liberated" Ori Megidish, 19, a soldier who was captured on the "black morning" of Oct 7, and who is now back with her family.
