Background:

  • Finnish authorities accused Russia of deliberately sending undocumented asylum seekers to the country, and, in response, decided to close 7 out of 8 border crossing points.
  • From 25 November, there will be only one crossing point on the Finnish-Russian border, Raja-Jooseppi, where asylum seekers will be able to apply for international protection.
  • Finnish border guards reported that in recent months, an exceptionally large number of people without entry documents have tried to enter Finland through checkpoints on the southeastern border.
