Presidents of Ukraine and Moldova congratulate each other on historic decision of European Commission

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President of Moldova Maia Sandu had a telephone conversation in which they exchanged congratulations on the recommendation of the European Commission to begin negotiations on the accession of both countries to the EU. Background: 

  • In a report published on 8 November, the European Commission recommended that EU states start accession negotiations with Ukraine, but Kyiv must implement further reforms.
  • The Commission also recommended opening negotiations with Moldova, but, as in the case of Ukraine, with conditions.
  • As for Georgia, the EC supported granting it the status of a candidate for accession, provided that Tbilisi fulfills a number of steps.
