Source: UK Defence Intelligence review dated 23 November, as reported by European Pravda The intelligence review indicates that a separate group of veterans of Wagner Private Military Company (PMC) received official veteran certificates on 14 November.

This is the first time that the mercenaries from the Wagner Group have been officially recognised as veterans.

The Ministry of Defence of Russia has created a new system that allows veterans of the Wagner Group to receive veterans' certificates and the corresponding allowances. Recently, the Wagner's Group was included in the command structure of the Russian Guard. This most likely indicates the rehabilitation of some Wagnerites by the Russian administration, which followed a long period of uncertainty about how the Russian authorities would treat Wagner fighters after the failed June 2023 mutiny.

Background:

  • Earlier, UK Defence Intelligence said that Russia has been trying to increase its control over the Wagner PMC following an attempted mutiny by the PMC and the peril of its leadership.
  • In August, UK Defence Intelligence believed that the death of the Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin would have a deeply destabilising effect on the mercenaries.
  • A month after that, the UK officially recognised the Wagner Group a terrorist organisation.
