IAEA head and Romanian foreign minister discuss danger at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), met with Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu at a visit to Bucharest on 8 April, where they discussed the situation in Ukraine. Grossi and Odobescu also discussed the agency's cooperation in Romania in the field of nuclear energy development, including the installation of small modular reactors.
Background:
- Zaporizhzhia NPP is temporarily occupied by Russian troops, and because of constant Russian attacks, which Moscow accused Ukraine of, it has been cut off from the Ukrainian power grid on several occasions.
- In May 2023, Grossi presented an updated security plan for the Zaporizhzhia NPP at a meeting of the UN Security Council, but its implementation has not moved forward.
