Ukraine agrees to open new border checkpoint with Hungary

The governments of Ukraine and Hungary have agreed on amendments to the agreement on border traffic control that will allow the opening of another checkpoint for passenger vehicles, Velyka Palad - Nagyhodos. Source: Ukrainian Ministry of Development of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure's statement on 8 April, European Pravda reports The amendments to the agreement, signed by Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov and Hungarian Ambassador Heizer Antal also allow empty heavy vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes to move through the Luzhanka-Beregsurany checkpoint.

Quote: "We are also considering building a new cargo checkpoint Dyida-Beregdaroc to increase the capacity of the Ukrainian-Hungarian border," the press service of the Ministry of Development quotes Kubrakov.

He added that the Ukrainian government is also working on negotiations on joint customs and border control with Hungary, which will speed up control procedures and reduce border crossing time. The amendments to the bilateral agreement are yet to be ratified. Currently, there are five checkpoints with Hungary, and lorries weighing more than 7.5 tonnes can pass through only one of them - Chop-Zahony.

Previously: Last week, the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers finalised an agreement with Romania to open a new border checkpoint between Bila Tserkva in Zakarpattia Oblast and Sighetu Marmatiei in Romania.
