US to prioritise supplying Patriot and NASAMS missiles to Ukraine

On 20 June, the White House confirmed that the United States will prioritise the delivery of anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine over other countries that have placed orders. Source: John Kirby, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the White House, stated this to journalists, as European Pravda reports, citing AFP  Details: He said that the US government has made a "difficult but necessary decision" to reprioritise the nearest planned deliveries of foreign military products to other countries in favour of Ukraine.

Among them, Kirby mentioned "Patriot and NASAMS missiles".

Background:

  • A number of media outlets, including the Financial Times, have previously announced that the US intends to stop all open orders for interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defence system until Ukraine has sufficient equipment to defend itself against Russian air attacks.
  • Poland, Romania, and Germany are among the European countries that have open orders for Patriot systems.

Spain holds an open order for Patriot launchers, and in January, a coalition of NATO states ordered 1,000 Patriot missiles.

  • The day before, it was reported that the United States would not be able to deliver Patriot missiles to Switzerland on time because it was giving priority to new deliveries to Ukraine.
