Ukrainian fencer Olha Kharlan reaches Olympic quarter-finals, defeating Azerbaijani opponent who previously represented Russia

Ukrainian fencer Olha Kharlan has competed in her second match in the individual sabre tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games. It is worth noting that Anna Bashta represented Russia, her country of birth, until 2019.

She switched her sport nationality five years ago. Harlan will compete against 29-year-old Hungarian Anna Marton in the quarter-finals. The match is scheduled for 29 July at 16:55 Kyiv time.

Olha Kharlan won an Olympic gold medal in Beijing 2008 (team event) and bronze medals in London 2012 and Rio 2016 (individual events).

She also holds a silver medal from the team tournament in Rio 2016.

Background: Kharlan's teammates Olena Kravatska and Alina Komashchuk were defeated in the round of 32 and are no longer contenders for individual medals in Paris.
