US closes embassy in Kyiv for one day: information received about likely large-scale strike on 20 November

The United States has decided to close its embassy in Kyiv on 20 November after receiving information about the threat of a major Russian strike on this day. Source: European Pravda with reference to the US Embassy in Ukraine  Quote from the embassy: "The US Embassy in Kyiv has received specific information of a potential significant air attack on 20 November.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy will be closed and Embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place."

Background:

  • On 19 November, unofficial information emerged regarding the first use of US-supplied ATACMS missiles on Russian territory after receiving authorisation from the US. 
  • Ukrainian sources claimed that the ATACMS strike targeted the arsenal of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defence in the town of Karachev, Bryansk Oblast.
