Elon Musk backs German far-right party that supports Putin – Reuters

American billionaire Elon Musk, who will join President-elect Donald Trump's administration as an external adviser, intervened in the German election campaign on Friday, 20 December, calling the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) the country's saviour. Source: Reuters, as reported by European Pravda Details: The AfD, known for its pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian views, ranks second in opinion polls and could prevent a centre-right or centre-left majority, but Germany's main more centrist parties have vowed to avoid cooperation with the AfD at the national level.

Germany is expected to vote in early elections on 23 February after the centre-left coalition government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz collapsed.

"Only the AfD can save Germany," Musk wrote in a post on his social media platform, X (Twitter). Musk, the world's richest man, has already expressed support for other anti-immigration parties across Europe.

The German government said it had taken note of Musk's post but declined to comment further during a press conference. Musk reposted a message from German right-wing influencer Naomi Seibt, who criticised Friedrich Merz, the conservative chancellor candidate who is leading in the polls.

Matthias Miersch, secretary general of Scholz's Social Democrats, told the media outlet t-online that Germany does not need foreign influence or "Trumpism", adding, "Stay out, Elon." Musk had already expressed support for the AfD last year when he criticised the German government's handling of illegal migration. Last month, Musk called for the dismissal of Italian judges who questioned the legality of government measures to prevent illegal immigration.

The far-right AfD currently appears to claim around 18-19% of the vote ahead of the early Bundestag elections due on 23 February 2025. The party has little chance of forming a government, as other political parties have ruled out cooperation with it. This month, AfD named its candidate for chancellor - Alice Weidel, the party's co-leader.
