Ukraine's foreign minister holds first conversation with Icelandic counterpart

Ukraine's Foreign Affairs Minister Andrii Sybiha held his first phone call with THorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, the newly-appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, on 31 December. Source: Sybiha on X (Twitter), as reported by European Pravda Sybiha said that he spoke about the situation on the front lines, Russia's air terror, and Ukraine's priority defence and energy needs during the "warm first call" with his Icelandic counterpart.

Background:

  • THorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, the leader of Iceland's Reform Party, became the country's Foreign Affairs Minister on 21 December after the formation of the new government. 
  • Earlier this year, the Icelandic Parliament adopted a resolution supporting Ukraine long-term, from 2024 to 2028.

    Additionally, Reykjavik signed a security agreement with Kyiv.
