The rise in supplies was driven by lower prices in neighbouring electrical markets. Ukraine's power imports increased by 2.6 times in December 2024 compared to November 2024, reaching more than 430,000 MWh. Hungary continues to account for the biggest share of the import structure (35%).
Slovakia ranks second, at 25%. Imports from Hungary surged the most this month, quadrupling to 152,000 MWh.

Background:
- If Slovakia stopped supplying electricity to Ukraine, Poland could increase its imports by redistributing the capacity among other EU neighbours.
- Slovakia will consider retaliatory measures against Ukraine, such as cutting off backup electricity supplies after 1 January, if Kyiv is expected to stop transiting Russian gas to Slovakia.
- Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico wrote a letter to European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in which he again complained about Ukraine's refusal to continue transiting Russian gas after 2024.
