The town of Bucha has announced the winner of an architectural competition to design a memorial at the Church of St Andrew the First-Called, where 116 innocent people were buried in a mass grave during the Russian occupation of Bucha. The main structure will have an inverted design to represent the upturned lives of the townspeople who lost everything.
The corridor, which leads underground before returning to the light, reflects the journey people have taken - from fear to hope," the mayor explained. An artificial pond will be located next to the memorial, with plaques bearing the names of the deceased along its shores. Each plaque will be accompanied by a light that will "shine at night like a memory that never fades away".

Earlier, the Bucha Town Council reported receiving six applications for participation in the competition.
Among the applicants were architects from Ukraine and the United States.
Public discussions of the project are currently underway, with authorities encouraging citizens to participate by sharing their opinions and suggesting ideas.
