Background:
- In 2024, the G7 agreed to jointly provide Ukraine with a US£50 billion loan insured with Russian assets: the funds will be provided formally as a loan but will be repaid from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets.
- The EU is to transfer a total of EUR18.1 billion under this mechanism.
Earlier on Thursday 20 March the European Commission transferred an additional EUR1 billion tranche to Ukraine.
- The Ukraine Facility programme, which came into force on 1 March 2024, provides up to EUR50 billion in stable funding in the form of grants and loans to support the recovery, reconstruction and modernisation of Ukraine for the period from 2024 to 2027.
