Second Russian missile strike caused mass casualties in Sumy – City Military Administration

The high number of fatalities and injuries in the missile attack on the city of Sumy on the morning of 13 April was caused by a second Russian ballistic strike. It was the second ballistic missile strike that caused most of the casualties, with many killed and wounded.

The second missile, likely packed with fragmentation elements, exploded in mid-air to inflict maximum damage on people in the city streets. Early assessments indicate that most civilians died due to these deadly fragments. The blast occurred roughly 200 metres from the initial strike, in an area with residential buildings, educational facilities, and shops."

Details: Kryvosheienko said the nature of the strike indicates a deliberate attack on civilian infrastructure and people.

Emergency services, law enforcement and experts remain on site.

"Official information about the type of munition used in this terrorist attack, aimed at killing as many people as possible, will be released soon," Kryvosheienko added.

Background: 

• A Russian missile strike on the centre of Sumy on the morning of 13 April killed 32 people, including two children.
