While gathering signatures in 2020 to support his presidential candidacy, Kalinin later declined on his own initiative. Kalinin openly endorses Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In addition, the politician organises events in support of the Russian soldiers by gathering warm clothing and shoes and delivering them to the occupied settlements of Luhansk Oblast.
Kalinin was placed on the sanctions lists by the European Union and Canada for his efforts to undermine the stability of the Moldovan government.
