At the beginning of 2024, Germany handed over ammunition for Leopard 1 tanks and armored vehicles to the Ukrainian military. As previously reported, in November 2023, the Government of Ukraine signed a contract with the German company Rheinmetall to produce a new batch of Leopard 1 tanks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This contract is for the repair and modernization of 25 Leopard 1A5 tanks, five Bergepanzer 2 armored recovery vehicles, and two training tanks for driver training.

It is financed by Germany with a value in the upper-two-digit million-euro range. Delivery is due to take place in 2024.

The Leopard 1 systems are currently being overhauled and ready for use at Rheinmetall's plants in Unterluss and Kassel.
