The 22-year-old from Kyiv dominated the first set, winning three games in a row, but then allowed Maria to take the lead.

The first game ended with a score of 4-6. Tennis players put on a decent show in the second set, with lost innings and continuous "swings." Such a game resulted in a natural tiebreak, in which Kostiuk proved to be stronger. The third set resembled the previous one.

With a 5-4 lead, Kostiuk served for the match, but she couldn't handle the jitters. Yet she dominated the next game, coming out on top.

Marta remained Ukraine's sole representative in singles: in the third round, Elina Svitolina lost to this year's Wimbledon winner Barbora Krejcikova. Kostiuk will face Croatian Donna Vekic in the quarterfinals, after defeating the world's second-ranked player Coco Gauff in a contentious match.

Marta Kostiuk also currently competes in doubles at the Olympics, alongside Daiana Yastremska.
