At AAD2024, the South African Armed Forces demonstrated their main battle tank, the Olifant Mk2, in action. Armyrecognition reported from the show that the Olifant Mk2 remains an important part of South Africa's defense equipment despite the small number of vehicles produced. This upgraded 60.5-tonne tank is an improved version of the Olifant Mk1B.

It includes upgraded armor, increased mobility, and firepower. The Olifant Mk2 tank's development was inspired by the experience gained during various combat operations. In particular, the Olifant was developed based on the experience of the South African Border War (Namibian War of Independence 1966-1989).

The Olifant Mk2 is powered by a 29.32-litre Continental V12 turbo diesel engine that develops 1,026 horsepower, allowing the tank to accelerate 25% faster than its predecessor.

It reaches a maximum speed of 58 km/h on roads and has significant mobility in the field. It is armed with a GT3B 105mm rifled gun that supports various types of ammunition, such as armor-piercing rounds and high-explosive shells. The tank's features include passive composite armor, an advanced fire control system, and the ability to fight in various weather conditions.

The commander's observation station provides a 360-degree panoramic view and thermal imaging capabilities. In the 1990s, options were considered to replace the Olifant Mk1B tank.

The possibility of purchasing the French AMX-56 Leclerc and the British Challenger 2E was studied.

However, due to budgetary constraints, it was decided to focus on upgrading existing tanks.

Only 26 units were brought to the Olifant Mk2 level.
