Background:
- On the morning of 20 December, Russian forces attacked Kyiv, causing a series of powerful explosions to reverberate through the city.
Ukrainian authorities noted that the blasts were the result of air defence units responding to the threat.
- Reports indicated that wreckage from downed Russian missiles landed in three districts of Kyiv: fires broke out and a heating pipeline was damaged. One person was killed and ten others injured.
- Serhii Popko, Head of Kyiv City Military Administration, reported that the Russian military had likely attacked the Ukrainian capital with Kinzhal air-to-surface hypersonic missiles and Iskander/KN-23 ballistic missiles.
- Later, Ukraine's Air Force reported that Ukrainian air defence had shot down five ballistic missiles headed for Kyiv and 40 UAVs in eight oblasts of Ukraine during the Russian combined attack, while another 20 drones did not reach their targets.
