Canada to buy NASAMS system for Ukraine
On Tuesday, Canadian defence minister Anita Anand announced that Ottawa would acquire the NASAMS air defence system from the United States and transfer it for the needs of Ukraine. European Pravda writes that Anand announced this following a telephone conversation with Oleksii Reznikov, the Minister of Defence of Ukraine. "This is Canada's first free provision of an air defence system to Ukraine.
In the face of Russia's brutal air strikes on Ukraine, this air defence system will help protect Ukrainian settlements and critical infrastructure from attacks by drones, missiles and aircraft," the head of the Canadian Defence Ministry stressed. She added that NASAMS systems have an extremely high efficiency index, making Canada's assistance a valuable contribution to Ukraine's defence capability.
"By providing comprehensive military assistance, Canada will continue to support the Ukrainian people in their fight against Russia's illegal and unjustified invasion," Anand said. Ukraine received the first two NASAMS air defence systems from the United States in early November 2022.
The USA also plans to transfer eight such systems.
