Large numbers of Russian soldiers submit letters of resignation

IRYNA BALACHUK - THURSDAY, 13 OCTOBER 2022, 09:00 Russian soldiers who fought in Ukraine earlier this year do not want to return to the battlefield: many of them are writing letters of resignation and prematurely terminating their contracts. Source: Serhii Haidai, Head of the Luhansk Oblast Military Administration, on Telegram

Quote from Haidai: "Half of the 200 military personnel serving in the 3rd Guards Special Operations Brigade have submitted letters of resignation or prematurely terminated their contracts after taking part in the war against Ukraine."

Details: Haidai said that the recently conscripted Russian soldiers are still willing to fight in Ukraine. He reported that around 500 conscripted soldiers from the 205th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade of the 49th Combined Arms Army of the Russian Federation had arrived in the combat zone to replenish Russia's losses in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. The Head of the Luhansk Oblast Military Administration said that they were wearing Soviet-style body armour and helmets and carrying AK-12 rifles, which have a problematic use history.

Haidai added that these are the soldiers thrown into the battles with Ukraine's defence forces [collective name for all Ukrainian military formations involved in the ongoing combat in this country - ed.]. The Oblast head additionally reported that over the course of 12 October, Ukrainian aircraft carried out 32 airstrikes on Russian forces, striking over 25 areas of concentration of Russian weapons and equipment and 7 anti-aircraft defence systems. Ukraine's air defence units shot down 4 Russian helicopters and 26 UAVs.

Ukraine's Rocket Forces and Artillery struck 6 Russian command posts, 7 areas where Russian military personnel, weapons and equipment were concentrated, and 4 ammunition storage points. Russian artillery and electronic warfare systems, as well as a number of other military targets, also came under Ukrainian fire. Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks in the vicinity of Bakhmutske, Ozarianivka, Ivanhrad, Bakhmut and Marinka.

Russian forces used all types of weapons at their disposal to fire on the following areas:

  • On the Kramatorsk front: areas in and around Bilohorivka, Zarichne, Novoyehorivka, Serebrianka, Spirne, Terny, Torske, Yampolivka and Hrekivka;
  • On the Bakhmut front: on areas in and around Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Zelenopillia, Soledar, Maiorsk, New-York, Yakovlivka and Zalizne;

There is a concentration of Russian manpower in Svatove, where the Russians are planting mines on bridges [presumably over the Krasna and Khoryna rivers that flow through the city - ed.]. The Russian occupiers shut down and restore mobile service at whim, Haidai added. For example, in the villages in the vicinity of Svatove it is only possible to make a phone call from up on a hill, in one particular spot where there is a signal.

The Head of the Luhansk Oblast Military Administration additionally reported that local residents were dissatisfied with the ramping up of control measures on the border between the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics and Russia.
