Belarus introduces the death penalty for “high treason” for military

Belarus introduces the death penalty for officials for treason. The Members of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus already supported a draft law on this in the second reading. The first reading took place on December 7 last year.

The Press Service of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus released the news. Now, the document must be approved by the Council of the Republic and then handed over to the self-proclaimed president of the country for signature. The draft law allows the death penalty to be applied to officials who hold public office, as well as military servicemen.

The reason for the highest degree of punishment is the commission of the crime provided for in Article 356 of the Criminal Code, "High Treason".

Belarusian MPs propose to detain the suspects of treason, sabotage, espionage, and conspiracy for up to 10 days. The term of the indictment would be up to 20 days.

At the same time, those who participated in the preparation of sabotage and attacks on institutions benefiting from international protection are proposed to be exempted from criminal liability if they contributed to the prevention of these crimes. As noted by the press service of the House of Representatives, changes to the legislation are made "to restrain destructive elements and to demonstrate a determined fight against treason." In addition, the new document proposes to set the fine for anti-state crimes up to 50,000 basic units (about 2.7 million hryvnias).

As of now, Belarus is already investigating cases of high treason. Thus, three suspects in the sabotage of the railway are facing the death penalty. This is reported on the website of the Investigative Committee of Belarus.

Specifically, the defendants are called "traitors of the motherland" in the report of the Investigative Committee, although the trial against them has not yet begun. Three "rail guerillas" are faced with execution. The Belarusian authorities estimated the damages caused by the actions of the accused in the amount of over 55 thousand Belarusian rubles (about £16.2 thousand).
