The Russians are once again building a naval base in Balaklava

26 October, 2022 Balaklava, Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Photo from open sources OSINT studies show that Russia plans to re-establish the military base in Balaklava and is carrying out modernization work at the base in Sevastopol.

Naval News reported about this. Journalists emphasize that the Russian fleet does not actively participate in the war against Ukraine after suffering a series of failures, including the sinking of the cruiser Moskva. However, there are signs that Russia has been trying to expand and enhance its naval bases in Crimea.

It is emphasized that the isolated bay of Balaklava is perfect for developing the additional infrastructure.

The Russian media has been periodically bringing up the possibility of reactivating the old Soviet base in Balaklava, which has long since been turned into a museum. However, only now the signs of actual repair work started to surface.

Naval News emphasizes: it is still too early to assess which ships and of what power would be able to be stationed there. At the same time, it is expected to become a satellite base of Sevastopol. There are also reports of the construction work being done at the Black Sea Fleet base in occupied Sevastopol.

It is noted that prior to the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, FSS's patrol ships were stationed at the Sevastopol base.

However, exactly what ships will be based there after the upgrade is unknown. The new quay in Sevastopol may have been planned for some time, but works were only started after February 24: the area was cleared and prepared for construction. In general, part of the work on the territory of the city began even before the start of a full-scale attack by Russia in 2022.

Construction is ongoing, and some facilities might be ready in a few months.

Journalists add that the Russian invasion is not going according to plan, so whether these objects of temporarily occupied Crimea will be completed and used in the territory is at the moment questionable.
