Russians to cancel mandatory learning of Ukrainian in occupied part of Zaporizhzhia Oblast – Russian media

The occupiers claim that from September 2023 parents will be able to choose what language, Russian or Ukrainian, their children will be learning as their mother tongue.

"This school year the Ukrainian language was mandatory for everyone, children are learning it three hours a week. From 1 September 2022 it was a mother tongue according to the curriculum but after the [pseudo - ed.] referendum, according to the laws of the Russian Federation, every person can choose a language they will learn as a mother tongue," Shapurova explained.

Children who will choose Russian will have nine hours of Russian language and literature a week from the beginning of the new school year and will not have to learn Ukrainian at all. The occupying authorities report that parents have to choose a language by 1 May.
