Slovakia will repair German howitzers for Ukraine

22 March, 2023 Ukrainian PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers in Lithuania, December 2022. Germany and Slovakia agreed to repair German-made armored vehicles, including PzH 2000 howitzers, for Ukraine. Anka Feldhusen, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Ukraine, announced this during her briefing.

"This process on the maintenance, especially the Panzerhaubitze, in Slovakia took a long time, but yesterday, a document that now these Panzerhaubitze are going directly to Slovakia was finally signed, that is, not so far," Feldhusen said. According to the Ambassador, Germany has always insisted that, along with tanks and other weapons, not only training is carried out, but also spare parts and maintenance should be provided.

Militarnyi previously reported that a military equipment repair center for Ukraine had started its work in Slovakia.

The center works within the intergovernmental agreement between Germany and Slovakia. The German arms manufacturer Krauss-Maffei Wegmann is in charge of organizing the repair base. The center will work on restoring equipment damaged or worn out during hostilities, such as Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers.

"For us, this is a very important contribution to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. We can help to ensure the continued operability of the weapons systems that we transferred and used so successfully," said Christian Freuding. The hub is located near the border between Slovakia and Ukraine.

During intensive hostilities, the equipment, particularly the PzH 2000, quickly wears out and requires high-quality repair. The close location of the repair hub greatly simplifies logistics and speeds up the cycle of sending broken self-propelled howitzers and returning repaired units to service. Before that, German self-propelled howitzers were repaired in Lithuania, thus, the equipment had a long route through several EU countries.
