Harry and Meghan have 'booby trapped' Coronation for young stars

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have "booby trapped" the King's Coronation for pop stars worried about alienating their audience, according to Boris Johnson's sister. Rachel Johnson reckons that is why the King is struggling to fill the bill for the extravaganza taking place at Windsor Castle on May 7. A host of A-list stars are believed to have knocked back the chance to appear at the gig.

Ed Sheeran and Adelle both rejected the chance to play due to scheduling conflicts. Other big names to have passed on the chance to serenade His Majesty include Harry Styles, Elton John, Kylie Minogue and The Spice Girls, who famously met him at a royal gala in 1997 when Geri Halliwell planted a kiss on his cheek, breaking royal protocol. And Johnson reckons the support for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex among a younger demographic is the reason acts are reluctant to get involved.

Pop stars used to queue round the block to serenade Queen Elizabeth. "There are a few weeks to go but, at this point, the King would be lucky to book tribute band Rumours of Fleetwood Mac, who I note are playing close by, at High Wycombe, on 7th May."

While some of the biggest stars will not be in attendance, acts expected to appear include Lionel Richie who is set to open the show and is a friend of the King. Three-fifths of Take That are also in line to perform, as is Olly Murs.

In comparison, a concert to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022 attracted the likes of Queen, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Diana Ross and Alicia Keys. Harry and Meghan are yet to confirm if they will attend the Coronation although they have been invited.
