Russian troops blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant dam, which resulted in its destruction. Operational Command South confirmed the information about the explosion. According to the information of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the evacuation of the civilian population has currently begun.
Flooding is possible in the following settlements: Mykolayivka, Olhivka, Liovo, Tyahinka, Poniativka, Ivanivka, Tokarivka, Poniativka, Prydniprovske, Sadove, and partially the city of Kherson, namely Korabel Island. In addition, Oleksii Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, announced the emergency meeting of the National Security Council due to the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP.
"President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky decided to hold an emergency meeting of the National Security Council of Ukraine in connection with the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP dam," he tweeted. "The destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam by Russian terrorists only confirms for the whole world that they must be expelled from every corner of Ukrainian land. Not a single meter should be left to them because they use every meter for terror," the President wrote. Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, also responded, calling the incident "Ecocide" and noting that this is another war crime of the Russian Federation.
In turn, Enerhoatom reports that the explosion of the Hydroelectric Power Plant may have negative consequences for the operation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, but the situation is currently under control.
The IAEA also confirms that there is currently no immediate risk to nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
