IAEA Director General arrives in Kyiv before visiting ZNPP

On Tuesday, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, visited Kyiv, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before a trip to the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP. The plant is not far from the Kakhovka HPP that was destroyed last week. Source: Reuters

The IAEA said on Sunday it needed access to a site near the station to check water levels after the reservoir lost much of its water due to the collapse of the Kakhovka Dam downstream. Speaking to reporters in Kyiv, Grossi said there was no immediate danger but that it was a "serious situation".

"It is a step in the wrong direction. It is yet another step into the weakening of the safety net that one has in any nuclear power plant," Grossi said.

Grossi said his visit to the facility on Tuesday night would provide a more accurate assessment of the risk. Grossi also said that he was "very concerned" that the nuclear plant could fall under a counterattack by Ukraine with the aim of liberating the territory occupied by the Russian Federation.

He added that there was no indication that Russian forces had moved heavy military equipment to the site, but that his visit was aimed at finding that out.
