Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, met with paramedic and defender of Azovstal Kateryna Polishchuk, better known by the alias of Ptashka (Bird). Paramedic Kateryna Polishchuk was at the Mariupol Azovstal plant during the siege of the city by the Russian occupation forces. The video from the factory, where she sings a rebel song, caused a wide resonance.

In May 2022, Kateryna Polishchuk, along with other defenders of Mariupol, was captured by the Russian forces.
In captivity, she gave an interview to Russian propagandists in Ukrainian, in which she stated that she did not regret that she had gone to defend Mariupol.
She was released as part of a prisoner exchange with Russia in autumn 2022.
