US bombers land in Sweden for the first time

The NATO Air Command reported this. This is the first time that US bombers have landed in Sweden. "This is a historic event.
Strong partners are important in these uncertain times and in anticipation of NATO membership," said Brigadier General Tommy Petersson, Deputy Commander of the Swedish Air Force. Before landing, the bombers were escorted by Jas 39 Gripen fighters.

"The goal is to practice the defense of Sweden on and above the Swedish territory," the Swedish Armed Forces stated. B-1 bombers had previously been involved in exercises with the Swedish Air Force and flew in Swedish airspace, but their landing occurred for the first time. "The US forces are conducting training and exercises in the Arctic region, but this landing strengthens not only the friendship between the United States and Sweden but also the joint defense of Europe," the US Air Force in Europe mentioned in its press release.
During a June 20 briefing, Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh did not disclose whether the U.S. plans to accelerate the pace of troop deployments while Sweden awaits NATO accession but emphasized the close partnership between the two countries. "Sweden has an extremely capable military, and for many years, the US and Sweden, along with NATO countries, have trained side by side," Singh noted.

Singh emphasized that relations will only get stronger when Sweden joins NATO.
"We look forward to an even deeper relationship with Sweden when it officially becomes NATO's 32nd member," she said.
